Darrell Lance Abbott August 20, — December 8, , best known by his stage name Dimebag Darrell , was an American musician and songwriter. He was the guitarist of the heavy metal bands Pantera and Damageplan , both of which he co-founded alongside his brother Vinnie Paul. As one of the driving forces behind the development of groove metal , he is considered among the most influential guitarists in heavy metal history and one of the greatest guitarists of all time. A son of country music producer Jerry Abbott , Abbott began playing guitar at age 12, and Pantera released its debut album, Metal Magic , when he was Originally a glam metal musician, Abbott went by the stage name Diamond Darrell at the time.
The tragedy took place on the evening of December 8th at the Alrosa Villa nightclub in Columbus, Ohio. The shooter, Nathan Gale, 25, was killed by a Columbus police officer minutes after the violence erupted. The deaths came on the twenty-fourth anniversary of the murder of John Lennon. Was his brother and drummer Vinnie Paul still alive, and what happened to everyone else? As the hours passed, the horrible truth was revealed and the metal scene was irrevocably altered. Dimebag had indeed been shot and killed while performing onstage with his band Damaegplan. Not only had the world lose a charismatic wildman, a generous soul and a stellar musician, the game instantly changed for nearly every other musician. No longer were fans rushing the stage viewed as welcome participants; they became potential assailants. You should know better. The stage became off-limits for everyone but musicians.
